Singapore Chinese Tea Ceremony with Sara's Family

In Singapore, according to our Chinese's Tradition, we usually have a Chinese Tea Ceremony to introduce the new bride or groom into the Family. Hence, at around 6pm, Dr VT and I had a mini Tea Ceremony at The Fullerton Hotel Reception Hall right outside their Grand Ballroom.
Dr VT and I wore traditional Chinese Cheong Sum Gown and Shirt for this event to represent our Chinese Culture and Heritage. I really love our unique outfits.

What is a Chinese tea ceremony?
Tea Means Respect
The tea ceremony is one of the most significant event at a Chinese wedding. It is called "jing cha" in Chinese, literally meaning, 'to respectfully offer tea'. It incorporates a very formal introduction of the bride and groom, and expresses respect to their families.
In a wedding, such an act is to show respect and gratitude to parents for all the years of love and care. A tea ceremony is also meaningful in many other ways. It is a symbol of purity, stability and fertility.
What do you wear to a Chinese tea ceremony?
A traditional Chinese wedding will often see the bride don a red dress in one of her outfit changes during the wedding or throughout the tea ceremony. Other common colours will include gold (a symbol of wealth and fortune), silver (purity and fulfillment) and pink (love and romance).

Dr VT received a Rolex Watch from Sara Shantelle's Parents
In most Chinese Wedding Culture, during the Tea Ceremony, the groom's side of the family will GIFT the bride - Si Dian Jin. Dr VT's parents presented me with the Si Dian Jin in Penang.
My side of the family gifted Dr VT with a brand new Rolex Watch and I received a diamond heart shaped necklace.
On top of these generous gifts from my parents, my relatives gave me gold rings, gold bracelets and also a 1 carat diamond earrings. Thank you so much! Much LOVE...
THE TRADITIONS BEHIND SI DIAN JIN
If you happen to come from a Teochew family, you might be familiar with Si Dian Jin (四点金), a popular wedding tradition that is an essential part of every Teochew wedding. To this day, countless of newlyweds in Singapore still practice this meaningful tradition, regardless of their dialect. We have prepared a guide on everything you need to know about Si Dian Jin, especially for those who like to preserve age-old customary traditions.
What Is Si Dian Jin?
Si Dian Jin (四点金) is an essential feature in every Teochew wedding, usually presented as a 4-piece-set of yellow gold consisting of a necklace, ring, bangle and a pair of earrings that is given to the bride prior to the actual wedding ceremony. Resembling the Chinese character “Jin” (金), the jewellery set represents the acceptance of the bride into her new family - who promises to take good care of her even after marriage. Si Dian Jin is often given during the Betrothal Ceremony (过大礼) from the groom’s parents to bestow a lifetime of conjugal bliss for the couple. Not only can it add a touch of tradition on the bride’s big day, Si Dian Jin is the treasured piece of heirloom to be loved and cherished for a lifetime, passing it down from generation to generation.
Si Dian Jin In Different Dialect Groups
Today, most Teochew families are still practicing the custom of Si Dian Jin. However, the integration of this tradition is no longer limited to the Teochew culture. It is now widely seen in Cantonese and Hokkien families, often emphasizing on a pair of bangles – one embracing a Dragon motif and a Phoenix in the other to represent matrimonial bliss and harmony. The items and pairings of Si Dian Jin may differ depending on your dialect. In fact, traditional Kuas are designed with shorter sleeves just so that brides can flaunt their new bridal jewellery.
The Meaning Behind Si Dian Jin
Si Dian Jin is highly regarded as a significant piece that embodies rich cultural roots and heritage. Meaningful symbols and motifs are used in every piece of bridal jewellery, ensuring a marriage full of bliss and abundance. Champagne Toast Ceremony - Chinese Yam Seng
"Yam Seng," or “cheers” in Chinese, is a Cantonese term that literally means “drink to victory," is usually practiced in wedding celebrations to congratulate the groom for marrying his beloved woman. Typically done towards the end of the reception, the couple, together with their families and the bridal party, will get up and cram around each table in turn to drink a toast with their guests. Everyone will raise their glasses high and shout "yam seng"so the atmosphere is pushed to a new high.
Guests from different tables will compete and try to shout louder than the rest, generating a lot of laughter and fun moments throughout the night. Particularly for Singaporean and Malaysian weddings, the newlywed and their families and good friends will stand on stage and shout out, “yam~~~~~~~~~~~seng!” They will mutter “yam......” for as long as possible until they ran out of breathe, followed by “seng......” The longer they hold, the more blessings will come. This process will be repeated three times, each time louder than the previous, so expect a louder "yam seng" to come each time!
The first for a blissful marriage, the second for eternal love between the couple, and the third for fertility.
So what's the point of "yam seng?"
These are all common Chinese wedding customs celebrating a new chapter in life as husband and wife, and wishing them happiness in their new marriage life ahead.
